Social Media - Twitter, Linked In, Google+, Facebook, Naymz, MySpace, YouTube and the list goes on.
I get dozens of tweets, Linked In updates, Facebook comments etc. every day. I get 4 or 5 newsletters every day.
I have noticed a trend in what I get... most of the things I receive are trying to sell me something.
My mortgage friends are all telling me they've got the best rates.
My real estate friends all tell me about their newest listing.
My business friends tell me about the latest special at their company.
My recruiting friends tell me about their latest opening.
Stop and think about that. All these people are asking me to buy something or sell something for them.
Do any of them ever check to see if I'm actually in the market for what they're buying or selling?
Here's today's tip. Provide something of value. Build our relationship, become a trusted adviser.
Don't blast me with motivational quotes unless you know it's related to something I'm doing.
Don't quote news articles to me unless it affects me today.
Don't tell me what you're selling unless you know it solves a problem I have.
Be a person first!
Remember... "People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care." (Actual author unknown but credited to John Maxwell because hes said it so often.)
I am a writer.
