What does that word mean?
According to various dictionaries RELATIONSHIP means the following
- a connection, association, or involvement.
- connection between persons by blood or marriage.
- an emotional or other connection between people:
- the relationship between teachers and students.
- a sexual involvement; affair.
Those are pretty dry words but definition number three is the closest to what comes to mind when I think of relationships.
Today my focus is on business relationships and how the third definition is key to business success.
Many business relationships are based on a single business transaction and that is where things start to go off track. If a person feels there is no emotional connection between both parties to the transaction then the possibility and probability of future business is limited because then it becomes price based. But...that can be changed.
What if the business selling the product or service provided great service? It would generate a little more business from the customer or client. But it could do more!
What if the business went even further and provided great service and a referral program? Repeat business would increase a little bit. But it could do more!
What if the business provided great service and made it's customers or clients feel welcome? Repeat business would increase even more because the client or customer would keep coming back. But it could do more!
What if the business provided great service but made the customer or clients not only feel welcome but valued? Repeat business would increase even more and so would referrals. But it could do more!
What if the business provided great service, made the customers and clients feel welcome and valued but went one step further and built a relationship with the customers and clients? Repeat business would increase, referrals would increase, the size of the sale would increase and advertising costs would drop!
Now, I know many of the people reading this are going to be skeptical and I feel sorry for them.
I know other business people reading this are only going to read a little bit and then say "I already do that." and I feel sorry for them.
I know other business people are going to say "It sounds great but I don't have the time." and I feel sorry for them.
I know other business people are going to say "It sounds great but it would be too hard to do." and I feel sorry for them.
I know a few business people are going to say "It sounds great but it will cost too much." before they even look into it a little bit and I feel sorry for them.
I know some business people who will say a combination of the things above and not stop to look at how to do it, yes, I feel sorry for them too.
A very few of the people who read this will reach out to me and ask me how they can build relationships, generate more sales and earn more referrals.
