She nosed the screen door open and sat down. She sniffed the air for a few minutes. No strange smells, no strange noises, she was safe.
Shelby sat and remembered the stairs. Her people had shown her how to go down the stairs a couple of times but now… she wanted to do it on her own.
She sniffed again. She listened. She decided to take the first step. Nervously Shelby slid her paw off the edge of the step. She knew hesitation wouldn’t get her outside. She took the next step. She was surprised at how far 7.75 inches is. The next step was easier. The last step was even easier. She had done it. She had taken the first few steps to freedom.
Shelby knew there would be more to follow but for today… 3 steps were enough. She could go out on her own when she needed to. When she decided it was time for her to go back in she yelped for help.
