This is the hardest part of writing. Looking at the blank screen or paper and filling it with something worth writing and reading.
Today I went to a coffee shop I like because I was stumped. Usually I'm able to focus and close out the world and write. It didn't work today.
I tried another one of my writing lubricants... a cup of coffee after lunch and sitting outside for a few minutes. It didn't work.
I resorted to another stimulant... writing with a pen. Still nothing.
What finally got me through was the desire to write, the commitment I've made to blog every day and determination. Writing about the experience of not knowing what to write helped me overcome my restlessness and my resistance.
On days like today the resistance to writing can be compared to the day you skip running or going to the gym. It can be the downfall of your fitness plan. If I hadn't written today it would have been too easy to skip writing the next time I struggled with getting to the keyboard.
When you commit to writing you must write and you must accept the fact that some days writing is hard work. You also need to accept that some days what you write will need to be rewritten the next day to get the clarity and tone you're looking for.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. Please feel free to drop me a line or make a comment. Tell me how you overcome resistance.
All the best,
