Shelby is blind. She has been for three weeks. As I watch her walk around I'm amazed at her ability to adapt. She gets more confident every day. Today she even went up the three steps from the backyard into the house.
When she is out in the yard she smells her way around. She knows by the smell of the different plants and flowers where she is. I watch her find her way around by walking into things and sniffing. She gets a little confused at times, when that happens she backs up and sits down. She doesn't panic, she doesn't howl or whine, she sits there and looks around waiting. I call to her or go stand next to her. She turns her head to me and stands. If she wants up she lifts her left front leg. I didn't teach her to do that she decided to do it on her own to show me
She has been expanding her territory by slowly going into different areas of the yard. When she gets too confused she barks until we go to her and talk to her. She usually wants up.
We've taken her to a specialist and learned that there is a good possibility that the cataract operation will be successful.
